Dudes, you got the Grateful God D*^*ed Dead & Mu'f%^*in Bo Dudley. Jerry & Bo just ripping it up in the 1st set w/I'm a Man. The sweet soulful Blues, the hip shaking grin smiling groove dug into the Academy of Music that night. Not sure which version I'm ranking because I'm streaming on the Relisten app, which is friggin amazing right now, no probs yet. But man it sounds like I'm there it's crystal clear and oozing authenticity from them just prior to the tour across the pond. Oh yeah for all Donna bashers out there this is the arrival of Donna on a GD Stage. But digression sets in easily when listening to this blistering sweet show. I've never heard the Dead play How Sweet it is" so soulful, funky and swinging. I've seen a lot of Dead and listened to even more. I've been on late '71 & early '72 jag lately and it's just the most authentic kick-ass shit this band commanded at the height of their awesomeness. Or riding high point of a wave several waves like 77-78, 84-86. But I've never heard em do are you lonely for me. The Smokestack is among the greatest that I've ever heard. Love the pedal steel Jerry on LLR. Sounds like sweet bliss the epitome of peace. And that's Phil adding super cool harmonies, kinda like laying down the vocals for Donna to emulate. Phil is one of the most melodically intuitive musicians, takes Jerry into all kinds of uncharted experimental meandering of melody, and doing it vocally here. Great Black Throated Wind, Mr. Charlie was smokin. Great Playing in the band (go to hell Bobby is cheese'ers). That brings us to perhaps one of the most aahMazing Lovelights ever! I know people will disagree that there are better & they may be right. This particular one has some highly charged energy bristling with psychedelic plasma. You gotta give it up for Pig Pen who had just recently returned from a serious and precursory bout of cirrohosis of the liver. Yeah they say he got pneumonia and really sick but his addiction wa in full swing. But here he is fresh of that injury and giving it his all for this night and the next several months. So he's back before He's Gone and he's like a lean mean harp blowing machine. This Lovelight they are all rallying around Pigpen and they're like a locomotive barreling down the line right through your auditory to your neocortex through to your subconscious. I think I heard during the tune up before it Phil say something like "no we can't do that, not likely. But they pulled it out and it sure is something. The Casey Jones encore is a sweet end to this volume of tremendous warmup shows to the European tour. The coolest thing about this is when the last note of Casey Jones ends the show loops right back to Hey Bo Diddley! Jerry Jamming out with Bo Diddley. They are like a freight train behind Bo, what a show!
